Tafsir of Az-Zukhruf 43:83

(So leave them to converse vainly and play...)

(So leave them) means: leave them alone, paying no heed to them, since they have not submitted to the truth after having heard this clear proof.

(To converse vainly) in their falsehoods, (and play) in their worldly life; for that which they are engaged in, of speech and action, is nothing but a form of ignorance. The jussive mood (jazm) here is the result of the imperative command.

(...until they meet their day which they are promised.)

(And it is the Day of Resurrection, according to the majority.) It is narrated from ‘Ikrimah and a group that it is the Day of Badr, for they were promised destruction on that day. Similar to this is the interpretation of it as the Day of Death. It has been said: It is more appropriate to interpret it as death rather than the Day of Resurrection, because the termination of vain conversation and play occurs at the time of death.

The response to the majority is that the Day of Resurrection is the promised day, and it is named as such in the language of the Sharia; interpreting it as anything else contradicts what is established. Regarding what was mentioned about the termination, it is refuted by the fact that death and what follows it are in the ruling of the Resurrection; hence the tradition: "Whoever dies, his resurrection has commenced." Such expressions may also be intended to indicate the long duration without regard for a termination, as when it is said: "He remains in misguidance until the Resurrection occurs."

Abu Ja’far, Ibn Muhaisin, and ‘Ubayd ibn ‘Aqil, narrating from Abu ‘Amr, read it as (yalqaw), the present tense of laqiya (to meet). It is said that this verse is abrogated by the Verse of the Sword.
