"Exalted is He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them," such as the air and the observable creatures of the atmosphere and others.

"And with Him is the knowledge of the Hour," meaning the knowledge of the Hour—the time at which the Resurrection occurs. The verbal noun is annexed to its object, and "the Hour" is taken in its linguistic sense, which is a small amount of time. It is also permissible for it to mean its terminological sense, which is the Day of Resurrection, and any problematic implication is dispelled by the slightest reflection. The precedence of the predicate indicates that He, the Exalted, reserves the knowledge of that exclusively to Himself.

"And to Him you will be returned," for recompense. The shift to the second person is for the purpose of threatening. The majority read it with the (of the third person), and in both readings, the verb is in the passive voice. It has also been read with the (of the second person) with a fatḥah, with the verb in the active voice. It has also been read as tuḥsharūn (you will be gathered), also with the of the second person and in the passive voice.
