Tafsir

“It shall envelop the people; this is a painful torment.” “Our Lord, remove the torment from us; indeed, we are believers.”
(It shall envelop the people): That is, it shall encompass them. The intended meaning of "the people" here is the disbelievers of Quraysh. Those who consider this smoke to be one of the Signs of the Hour apply the term "people" to those who will be present at that time. Those who consider it to refer to the Day of Resurrection apply the term "people" in a general sense. The sentence serves as another description for the smoke.
His saying—Exalted is He—(This is a painful torment): It is in the position of an accusative [nasb] due to an implied verb, serving as a state [hal], meaning: “saying” or “they say: ‘This...’” The pointing [hādha/this] is for the purpose of magnification. It has been said: It is permissible for “This is a painful torment” to be an informative statement from the Almighty—exalted is He—to terrify them regarding the matter, just as He—Glory be to Him—said in the story of the one to be sacrificed: “Indeed, this is the clear trial.” Thus, it is an inception [isti'naf] or an interjection [i'tirad], and the pointing with “this” is to denote its imminent occurrence and certainty. The former interpretation is superior.
His saying—Glory be to Him—(Our Lord...) to the end of the verse, as stated explicitly by more than one exegete, is a promise from them of faith if He—Majestic and Exalted is He—were to remove the torment from them. It is as if they said: "Our Lord, if You remove the torment from us, we will believe." However, they shifted to what is contained in the revelation to demonstrate greater longing. They applied it to that because, according to some narrations, when the famine intensified upon the Quraysh, Abu Sufyan went to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and adjured him by the ties of kinship, and promised him that if he prayed for them and their affliction was removed, they would believe.
