Tafsir of Ad-Dukhan 44:14

(Then they turned away from him) meaning, from that Messenger, peace be upon him; and he is himself. The sentence is a conjunction to His saying—Exalted is He—(And there had come to them), and so on. Its conjunction to His saying—Glorified is He—(Our Lord), and so on, on the basis that it is meant as they saying: (Our Lord), and so on, is not sound. "Then" (thumma) is used for distancing and sequential ranking; for they had turned away as soon as he came to them and they witnessed from him what they witnessed, which should have necessitated turning toward him, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

(And they said) along with that, regarding his right, peace be upon him:

Meaning, at one time they said: "A Roman slave named Addas, who belongs to some of the Thaqif tribe, teaches him." And at another time: "Possessed." Or, some of them said one thing and others said another. "And possessed" was not mentioned with the conjunction "and" because the intent is to enumerate their loathsome acts. Razin ibn Hubaysh read it as mu‘allim (teacher/one who is taught) with a kasra on the lam, thus majnun (possessed) becomes an adjective; as if they meant "a possessed messenger"—far be it from him, and again far be it from him, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
