[This means]: Be in a state of isolation from me, neither for me nor against me, and do not cause me any harm, for that is not the recompense for one who calls you to that which contains your salvation. It is also said that the meaning is: "If you do not believe me, then there shall be no allegiance between me and those who do not believe; so withdraw and sever the ties of connection with me." In this interpretation, the [grammatical] response to the conditional clause is omitted, and its consequence is placed in its stead. The first interpretation is more appropriate for the context, and "isolation" (al-i‘tizal) in that sense refers to abandonment, even if it does not necessitate physical separation.
