Al-Jathiya: (17) "And We gave them clear proofs of the matter..."
"And We gave them clear proofs of the matter": That is, manifest evidence concerning the matter of religion, where "of" (min) carries the meaning of "in."
The "clear proofs" (al-bayyinat) are the evidences, and included within this are the miracles of Moses, upon him be peace, and some have interpreted them specifically as such.
According to Ibn Abbas, they are signs regarding the matter of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and indicators manifesting his truthfulness—upon him be blessings and peace—such as his migrating from Mecca to Yathrib and his supporters being its people, in addition to other things mentioned in their books.
"And they did not differ" regarding that matter "except after the knowledge had come to them" regarding the reality of the situation. Thus, they made what should have necessitated the removal of disagreement a cause for its entrenchment.
"Out of envious rebellion among themselves": That is, out of animosity and envy, without any doubt therein.
"Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection" by holding them to account and recompensing them "concerning that over which they used to differ."
