And it will be said, "Today We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours, and your refuge is the Fire, and for you there are no helpers.

"And it will be said, 'Today We will forget you,'" meaning: We will leave you in the torment. This is from the category of mentioning the cause for the effect, because whoever forgets a thing leaves it, or it means: We will place you in the position of something forgotten, which is given no concern. In this there is a metaphorical representation (isti'arah tamthiliyyah). It is also permitted that it be an implied metaphor (isti'arah makniyyah) in the pronoun of address.
"As you forgot" in the worldly life, "the meeting of this Day of yours," meaning: as you abandoned its preparation, which is piety and belief in it; or as you did not care for meeting it and did not let it cross your minds—the one who casts aside is forgotten. It is also permitted that the expression of "forgetting" is used because knowledge of it is embedded in their nature, or because they were empowered to know it through the manifestation of its proofs. Thus, in the first "forgetting," there is a stylistic matching (mushakalah).
The addition (genitive construction) of "meeting" (liqa') to "day" is the addition of a verbal noun to its adverbial context; it is according to the meaning of a preposition (in/at) and an implied object, i.e., your meeting with Allah the Exalted and His retribution on this day of yours. The scholar Al-Taftazani said: "The meeting of this Day of yours," like the "scheming of the night," is from the category of juridical/adverbial metaphor (al-majaz al-hukmi). For this reason, he treated the mudaf ilayh (the latter term in the construction) as the object of the verb. It was not rendered as a true addition of a verbal noun to its object because the rebuke is not for forgetting the meeting of the day itself, but for forgetting the retribution contained within it.
Some of the eminent scholars said: It is not hidden that "meeting the day" may be a metonymy for meeting everything contained within it, and that is more appropriate for the context, as the discourse is for the denial of resurrection.
"And your refuge is the Fire, and there will be no helpers for you." There is not one among you who is a helper to save you from it.
