(He said: "The knowledge...") meaning the knowledge of the time of its descent, or the knowledge of all things among which is that [event], (...is only with Allah") alone. I have no knowledge of the time of its descent. This statement is a metonymy indicating that he [the Prophet] has no power over it, nor can he hasten it; for if he were able to do so and desired it, he would have some knowledge of it. Thus, the negation of his knowledge—indicated by the restriction—is a negation of his involvement in it, such that he should be asked to hasten it from Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He) or be prayed to for it.

By this explanation, it is understood how his (peace be upon him) answer corresponds to their saying: "Bring it to us." [The meaning is]: He will bring it to you at its ordained time. "And I convey to you that with which I have been sent," of the obligations of the Message, among which is the clarification of the descent of the punishment if you do not desist from polytheism. Abu Amr recited "uballighukum" (I convey to you) from the [verb] al-iblagh (conveyance).

("But I see you as a people who are ignorant.")

(Your state is ignorance, and among the effects of that is that you propose to me what is not among the duties of the messengers, such as bringing the punishment.)
