They said, "O our people, indeed we have heard a [recited] Book revealed after Moses confirming what was before it which guides to the truth and to a straight path.
ﱕ ﱖ ﱗ ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ ﱜ ﱝ ﱞ ﱟ ﱠ ﱡ ﱢ ﱣ ﱤ ﱥ ﱦ ﱧ
They said, "O our people, indeed we have heard a [recited] Book revealed after Moses confirming what was before it which guides to the truth and to a straight path.
Tafsir
Verse range: 46:30
(They said), that is, upon their return to their people: (O our people, indeed we have heard a Book) of magnificent status (revealed after Moses). They mentioned him rather than Jesus, peace be upon them both, because he is agreed upon by the people of the two scriptures, and because the Book revealed to him was the greatest of the Books before the Quran, and Jesus, peace be upon him, was commanded to act upon most or all of what was in it.
'Ata said: Because they were followers of Judaism, and this requires an authentic transmission. It is reported from Ibn 'Abbas that the jinn had not heard of the affair of Jesus, peace be upon him, and that is why they said that. However, there is remoteness in this, for the fame of the affair of Jesus, peace be upon him, and the spread of his religion are too manifest to be hidden, especially from the jinn. Hence, Abu Hayyan said: This is not authentic from Ibn 'Abbas.
(Confirming what was before it) of the Torah, or of all the previous divine Books; (guiding to the Truth) regarding correct beliefs, (and to a straight path) of subsidiary rulings, or that which encompasses these and other beliefs, as it is a case of mentioning the general after the specific.
