Muhammad: (9) That is because they disliked...

That (i.e., what has been mentioned regarding their wretchedness and leading astray) is because they disliked what Allah has revealed of the Qur’an, due to the monotheism and the various rulings it contains that contradict what they were accustomed to and what their souls—which command evil—desired. This is a specification and an explicit statement of the causality of disbelief in the Qur’an for [their] wretchedness and leading astray, for it is already known from the words of the Almighty: "And those who disbelieved..." and so on, that absolute disbelief—of which disbelief in the Qur’an is a primary component—is the cause of this.

So He rendered their deeds worthless because of that; the deeds which, had they performed them alongside faith, would have earned them a reward. The mention of this nullification, along with the mention of leading them astray, is intended to indicate that disbelief in the Qur’an is a necessary consequence that is never separated from them in any state.
