Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:7

And remember the favor of Allah upon you and His covenant with which He bound you when you said, "We hear and we obey"; and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts.

"And remember the favor of Allah upon you," which is the blessing of Islam, or a more general interpretation intended to encompass the entire category of blessings. They were commanded to do this so that they might remember the Bestower and be encouraged to show gratitude to Him.

"And His covenant with which He bound you," meaning the pledge He took from you. His saying, "When you said, 'We hear and we obey'," is a circumstantial temporal marker (zharf) for "with which He bound you," or for an implied predicate acting as a state (hal) describing the pronoun governed by the preposition in "with it" (bihi), or describing "His covenant." That is, it was at the time of your saying, "We hear and we obey." The purpose of this restriction is to emphasize the obligation of observing the covenant by reminding them of their own statement and their commitment to uphold it. What is intended by this covenant is the pledge taken from the Muslims when the Prophet (peace be upon him) took their oath at the Second Aqabah in the thirteenth year of his Prophethood, to listen and obey in times of ease and hardship, and in what is agreeable and disagreeable, as narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim from the hadith of Ubadah ibn al-Samit. It is also said that it refers to the covenant of the First Aqabah in the eleventh year, or the Pledge of Ridwan at Hudaybiyyah. The attribution of this covenant to Allah, despite it being issued by the Prophet (peace be upon him), is because the ultimate source is Him (Glorified be He), as expressed in the words of Allah: "Indeed, those who pledge allegiance to you are actually pledging allegiance to Allah."

Ibn Jarir and Ibn Humayd recorded from Mujahid that he said: "It is the covenant that He bound the children of Adam with when He brought them forth from the loins of their father (peace be upon him)," though this view is far-fetched.

"And fear Allah" regarding forgetting His favor or breaking His covenant, or in all that you do and abandon; thus, what has been mentioned is included as a primary concern.

"Indeed, Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts," meaning the hidden matters that are so intimately connected to them that the term "possessor" is rightly applied to them, so He will recompense you for them; and what then is your presumption regarding the manifest deeds? This sentence is a parenthetical clause and a justification for the command, and the use of the Majestic Name is for reasons mentioned more than once.
