And obey Allah and obey the Messenger and beware. And if you turn away - then know that upon Our Messenger is only [the responsibility for] clear notification.

Tafsir
Verse range: 5:92
(And obey Allah and obey the Messenger) is a conjunction linked to "shun it" (in the previous verse); meaning: obey them both in all that they have commanded and prohibited. Their command and prohibition regarding wine and gambling are included in this primarily.
(And beware): that is, [beware of] disobeying them in that. This serves to emphasize the first command. It has also been suggested that the intent is: obey in what they have commanded, and beware of what they have prohibited; thus, there is no emphasis. It has also been suggested that no object for "beware" should be implied; meaning: be cautious and fearful. They were commanded to do this because when they are cautious, caution invites them to avoid every evil and perform every good deed.
(But if you turn away): meaning, if you turn aside and do not act according to what you have been commanded, (then know that upon Our Messenger is only the clear conveyance): that is, he has spared no effort in that, so the proof has been established against you, excuses have ended, pretexts have been cut off, and nothing remains after that but punishment.
In this—as al-Tabrisi and others have said—there is a threat and a severity of warning that is not hidden.
It has been said that the meaning is: Know that you have not harmed the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) by your turning away, because he was not tasked with anything but the clear conveyance through the verses, and he has indeed done so; you have only harmed yourselves when you turned away from what you were tasked with. This is invalid, as it cannot be imagined that they claimed to have caused harm by their turning away such that it would be refuted.
Similar to this is what was said: the meaning is, if you turn away, do not hope that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) will neglect you, for there is nothing upon the Messenger except the clear conveyance, and it is not permissible for him to abandon the conveyance.
