"Preventer of good, aggressor"

"Preventer of good": An intensive form indicating one who frequently withholds wealth from its obligatory dues. Qatadah, Mujahid, and Ikrimah said: It means Zakat (obligatory charity). Others have said: The intended meaning of "good" is Islam, as the verse was revealed concerning al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, who used to say to his nephews: "Whoever among you enters Islam, I shall not benefit him with anything as long as I live." The intensive form is used in consideration of the number of his nephews and the repetition of his preventing them.

This has been weakened by the argument that if that were the intended meaning, the apparent implication would have been "a preventer from the good" (mana' 'an al-khayr). In al-Bahr, it is stated that it is better to generalize "good" to include wealth and other things.

"Aggressor": An oppressor, one who transgresses the truth and exceeds its bounds.

"Doubting": One who is skeptical regarding Allah the Exalted and His religion. It is also said: [Skeptical] regarding the Resurrection.
