Tafsir of Ad-Dhariyat 51:55

(And remind, for the reminder...)

(And remind) — the verb is intransitive, indicating the act of reminding and preaching; do not cease from it. The command to remind implies persistence in it, and the verb is treated as if it were intransitive. It is also permissible that the object is omitted, meaning: "remind them," omitted because the matter is obvious.

(For the reminder benefits the believers)

Meaning: those whom Allah the Exalted has decreed to believe, or those who are believers in actuality; for it increases them in insight and strength of certainty. In Al-Bahr, it is suggested that the apparent meaning of the verse indicates a call for reconciliation [with the polytheists], and that it is abrogated by the Verse of the Sword. Abu Dawud in his Nasikh and Ibn al-Mundhir reported from Ibn Abbas regarding the saying of the Exalted: "(So turn away from them)..." that Allah commanded him to turn away from them in order that He might punish them. He excused Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Exalted said: "(And remind)..." and thus it abrogated it.

Ibn Jarir, Ibn Abi Hatim, Al-Bayhaqi in al-Shu’ab, Al-Diya’ in al-Mukhtarah, and a group reported via the path of Mujahid from Ali—may Allah the Exalted ennoble his countenance—who said: "When the verse '(So turn away from them, for you are not to be blamed)' was revealed, there remained not one of us who did not despair of destruction, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was commanded to turn away from us. Then, '(And remind, for the reminder benefits the believers)' was revealed, and our souls found peace." And from Qatadah: "They thought that the revelation had ceased and that punishment had arrived, so Allah the Exalted revealed: '(And remind)...'"
