Tafsir of At-Tur 52:23

"They will snatch from one another therein a cup," meaning they will pull it toward themselves in Paradise—they and their companions—in a playful, competitive tug-of-war, just as drinking companions do among themselves in this world due to their intense joy. Al-Akhtal said:

I vied with him for the sweet, encompassing wine, While the roosters crowed, and the time for the night-traveler's departure had come.

It is said: "Tanaazu'" (snatching/vying) is a metaphor for serving one another. "Ka's" (cup) is a feminine noun by convention, like "khamr" (wine). It is not famously called a "ka's" unless it is filled with wine or nearly full. It may also be applied to the wine itself as a metaphor based on the relation of proximity. Al-Raghib said: "The 'ka's' is the vessel together with the drink inside it, and each of them may be called a 'ka's' individually." Some have interpreted it here as the vessel containing the wine, while others have interpreted it as the wine itself. The former is more consistent with the act of "snatching," and the latter is more consistent with His, the Exalted's, saying: "No 'laghw' (vain talk) therein, nor 'ta'thim' (sinful speech)."

Meaning: They shall not speak, while drinking, any vain or idle talk, nor shall there be any "ta'thim," meaning they shall not do what would cause the doer to be attributed to sin as he would be in the Abode of Accountability, which is the custom of drinking companions in this world. Rather, they shall speak wisdom and the most excellent of speech, and they shall do only what the noble do. Ibn Kathir and Abu 'Amr read "laghw" and "ta'thim" with a fathah (vowel sign 'a') on both.
