At-Tur: 27

"So Allah has conferred favor upon us"—that is, through mercy and success—"and has protected us from the punishment of the Samum."

That is, the punishment of the Fire, which penetrates the pores as the Samum penetrates—which is the well-known hot wind. Although the intensity is greater in the Fire, the comparison is made to the Samum because it is more familiar to witness in this world; therefore, it is made the object of comparison (mushabbah bihi). Al-Hasan said: "The Samum is one of the names of Hell."

Regarding "among our families," the intended meaning is to clarify what Allah has conferred upon them by [granting] their families’ following of them. It has been said that "among our families" is mentioned to establish their fear [of Allah] at all times and in all states—as a matter of a fortiori reasoning (al-tariq al-awla)—since being among one’s family is usually a place of security. I see no fault in this. However, the notion that this is because the question pertains to what they were specifically honored with, as opposed to their families, is of no substance. It has also been said: Perhaps it is better to interpret this as an indication of [their] compassion for the creation of Allah.
