And [by] the frequented House
Tafsir
Verse range: 52:4
It is a house in the seventh heaven which seventy thousand angels enter every day, and they do not return to it until the Hour is established. This was recorded by Ibn Jarir, Ibn al-Mundhir, al-Hakim (who authenticated it), Ibn Marduyah, and al-Bayhaqi in al-Shu’ab, from Anas in a marfu’ (elevated) narration.
‘Abd al-Razzaq and a group recorded from Abu al-Tufayl that Ibn al-Kawwa’ asked ‘Ali (may Allah honor his face) about it, and he said: "That is al-Darah; it is a house above seven heavens, beneath the Throne, which seventy thousand angels enter every day," and so on. It came in a narration from him (may Allah honor his face) and from Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that it is directly aligned with the Ka’bah, such that if it were to fall, it would fall upon it.
It is narrated from Mujahid, Qatadah, and Ibn Zayd that in every heaven, aligned with the Ka’bah, there is a house whose sanctity is like its sanctity, and its "frequenting" (imarah) consists of the multitude of angels (upon them be peace) who come to it, as you have heard.
Al-Hasan said: "It is the Ka’bah; Allah (Exalted be He) frequents it every year with six hundred thousand people, and if they are fewer, He (Glory be to Him) completes the number with angels." You know that it is a well-known figurative expression to describe a place as "frequented" (ma’mur) in the sense of being inhabited or settled, as people descend upon a place where they reside. Whether the report mentioned from al-Hasan—regarding the frequenting of the Ka’bah by those who reside near it and its pilgrims—is authentic or not, [this definition holds].
