An-Najm: (29) So turn away from whoever...

"So turn away from whoever turns away from Our Reminder."

This means turn away from them, and the relative pronoun (man - whoever) is used in place of the pronoun referring to them, in order to facilitate describing them through the repulsive attributes contained within the scope of its relative clause, and to provide the reason for the ruling through those attributes.

That is: turn away from those who have turned away from Our Reminder, which is beneficial for true knowledge. It is the Magnificent Quran, which contains the exposition of true beliefs, encompasses the knowledge of the first and the last, and reminds of the Hereafter—the matters within it that are to be desired and those to be feared. The "turning away" from it refers to the abandonment of accepting what is within it and the lack of concern for it.

It is also said: The "Reminder" refers to the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and turning away from it means abandoning what he brought. It is also said: It refers to Faith. Others have said: It is meant literally, and turning away from it is a metonymy for being heedless of Him, the Almighty and Majestic.

"And desired nothing but the worldly life."

Being content with it, limiting their vision to it, and striving in what rectifies it, like an-Nadr ibn al-Harith and al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah. The intent behind the aforementioned command is to forbid excessive concern for their guidance; it is as if it were said: "Do not be excessive in your concern for the guidance of those who turn away from Our Reminder and are immersed in the worldly life, such that it is the ultimate limit of their ambition and the extent of their striving."
