An-Najm : ( 55 ) So which of the favors of your Lord ...

(So which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt?) That is, do you waver in? The form tafa'ala here is stripped of the implication of multiplicity regarding the subject and object, used instead to denote intensity in the action. It has been said that the act of tamari (doubting) can be attributed to a single person considering the multiplicity of its object, which are the favors being doubted.

As for the address, it is said to be directed at the Messenger of Allah (may Allah exalt him and grant him peace) by way of stirring and alluding to others. It is also said to be directed at mankind in general, which is the more apparent interpretation. The interrogative is for the sake of denial.

Al-Ala' is the plural of ila', meaning favors (blessings). The intended meaning here is that which was enumerated in the preceding verses. Everything is referred to by this term—even though some of it includes calamities—because of the lessons and admonitions such calamities hold for those who reflect, and the benefit they provide to the prophets and the believers; thus, they are also favors in that regard. It has been said that the expression al-ala' is used by way of predominance (taghlib), though it has been objected that the context does not support this. Ya'qub and Ibn Muhaysin read rabbika tamara (your Lord [you] doubt) with a doubled ta'.
