Has the message been sent down upon him from among us? Rather, he is an insolent liar."
Tafsir
Verse range: 54:25
Meaning: Has the revelation been sent down upon him from among us, while there are those among us who are more deserving of it than he?
The expression "cast" (ulqiya) is used instead of "sent down" (unzila), and it is said this is because it implies haste in the action.
Meaning: He is intense in his batar (arrogance/insolence). According to al-Raghib, this is a state of distraction that afflicts one due to an inability to bear blessings properly, a failure to fulfill their due rights, and placing them where they do not belong. It is close in meaning to tarab (exultation), which is a lightness that often affects one from joy.
Their intent is: It is not as he claims; rather, he is such and such. The intensity of his insolence and his desire to be exalted above us has led him to make this claim.
Qatadah and Abu Qilabah recited it as: "Rather, he is the insolent liar" (bal huwa al-kadhdhab al-ashar), with the definite article in both words, with a fatha on the shin and a doubled ra. What pertains to this will come shortly, if Allah Almighty wills.
