Tafsir of Al-Qamar 54:53

"And everything small and great..."

And everything small and great—meaning of the deeds, as has been narrated from Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, and others.

It is also said: Everything, including deeds and everything that will come to pass until the Day of Resurrection, is mustatar (inscribed/recorded/written) in the Preserved Tablet with all its details. It is derived from al-satr (the line), meaning writing. It is said: "I wrote" (satartu) and "I inscribed" (asttartu), which share the same meaning.

Al-A'mash, 'Imran, and 'Ismah—narrating from Abu Bakr on the authority of 'Asim—recited it as mustattir (with a shaddah on the ra). The author of al-Lawami' said: It is possible that it is derived from tara (the sprouting of plants or the appearance of a mustache), meaning everything small and great has appeared in the Tablet and is fixed therein. It is also possible that it is derived from al-istitar (concealment/being recorded), but the ra was given a shaddah for the sake of pausing, according to the dialect of those who say "Ja'far" and "Yaf'al" with a shaddah when pausing. That is, they treat the state of continuation (wasl) as they treat the state of pausing (waqf). Its metrical form according to the first interpretation is mustaf'il, and according to the second, it is mufta'il.
