"He created the Jinn from..."

"The Jinn" refers to the father of the Jinn, who is Iblis; this was stated by al-Hasan. Mujahid said: "He is the father of the Jinn, but it is not Iblis." It has also been said: "It is a generic noun encompassing all of the Jinn."

"From a marij (a flame without smoke)," as is narrated from Ibn Abbas. It is also said: "It is the flame mixed with the blackness of fire, or with green, yellow, and red colors," as narrated from Mujahid, derived from the verb maraja (to fluctuate and mix). The particle min (from) denotes the beginning of the origin.

Regarding His saying—Exalted is He—"of fire": This is an exposition of the marij. The use of the indefinite form is for conformity, and because the definite form would be heavy upon it; it is as if it were said: "He was created from pure fire or mixed fire," according to the two interpretations. It is permissible to consider min in this instance as denoting the starting point, and the indefinite form is used because a specific type of fire, distinct from other fires, was intended, not this fire that is known to us. In any case, the marij in relation to the Jinn is like the soil in relation to mankind. The verse contains a refutation of those who claim that the Jinn are incorporeal souls.
