*Ar-Rahman: 61–62*

"So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?" (61)

"And below them are two [other] gardens." (62)

The phrase "And below them" is a subject, and beneath those two aforementioned gardens, in rank and estimation, are two other gardens.

Ibn Zayd and the majority of scholars stated that the first two are for those who preceded in faith (al-sabiqun), and these two are for the Companions of the Right (ashab al-yamin). Ibn Jarir, Ibn Abi Hatim, and Ibn Marduyah recorded from Abu Musa, from the Prophet (may Allah exalt him and grant him peace), regarding the Almighty’s saying: "But for he who has feared the position of his Lord are two gardens," and His saying: "And below them are two gardens," that he said: "Two gardens of gold for the those brought near (al-muqarrabun), and two of silver for the Companions of the Right."

Al-Hasan said: The first two are for the forerunners, and the latter two are for their followers; it was narrated as a mawquf report, and al-Hakim authenticated it from Abu Musa. Some have claimed that the first two are for those who feared [God], and the latter two are for their descendants who were joined with them, though I have not found any evidence for this in the reports.

In al-Bahr, it is related from Ibn Abbas that he said: "[Below them] in proximity to those bestowed with favor," and that the two mentioned later are superior to the first two. He claimed that the attributes following [this verse] are more praiseworthy than the preceding attributes, and he was agreed upon by those who followed him in this. The full discussion regarding this will follow, if Allah the Almighty wills.
