Tafsir
Verse range: 56:17
(They will be attended by) immortal youths
(They will be attended by them)—this is another state [of the people of Paradise] or a resumption of speech, meaning: they will circulate around them for service.
(Immortal youths)—that is, they will remain forever in the form of youths, in the stage of servitude, never changing from that state. Furthermore, the people of Paradise are themselves immortal and do not die. Al-Farra and Ibn Jubayr said: [They are those] wearing khuldah, which is a type of earring.
It has been said: They are the children of the people of this world who had no good deeds to be rewarded for, nor bad deeds to be punished for. This has been narrated from the Commander of the Faithful, Ali—may Allah, the Exalted, ennoble his countenance—and from al-Hasan al-Basri. It became famous that the Prophet—peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—said: "The children of the polytheists are the servants of the people of Paradise." Al-Tibi mentioned that this is not authentic; rather, what refutes it is authentic. Al-Bukhari, Abu Dawud, and al-Nasa'i narrated from Aisha, who said: "A child died, so I said, 'Glad tidings to him, a sparrow from the sparrows of Paradise.' The Prophet—peace be upon him—said: 'Do you not know that Allah, the Exalted, created Paradise and created the Fire, and He created for this [Paradise] its inhabitants and for this [Fire] its inhabitants?'" In another narration: "He created them for both while they were in the loins of their fathers."
Abu Dawud also narrated from her that she said: "I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what of the offspring of the believers?' He said: 'They are with their fathers.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, without [any] deeds?' He said: 'Allah knows best what they would have been doing.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what of the offspring of the polytheists?' He said: 'They are with their fathers.' I said, 'Without [any] deeds?' He said: 'Allah knows best what they would have been doing.'"
It has also been said: They will be tested on the Day of Resurrection, where a fire will be brought forth for them and they will be commanded to enter it. Whoever enters it will find it cool and will be admitted into Paradise, and whoever refuses will be admitted into the Fire along with the rest of the polytheists, and they narrate a report regarding this.
Among the strange [opinions] is what was said: That after their resurrection, they will become dust like the beasts. In al-Kashf, it is stated that the hadiths on this issue are conflicting, as are the schools of thought; the matter is speculative, and knowledge is with Allah, the Exalted, and He—Mighty and Majestic is He—knows best. This is the end [of the discussion]. The majority hold the view that they will enter Paradise by the grace of Allah, the Exalted, and the abundance of His mercy—Blessed and Exalted is He—and the full discussion on this will follow, if Allah, the Exalted, wills.
