(And *Talh Mandud*)

(And Talh Mandud): Its fruit is layered from its base to its summit, and it possesses no protruding trunk.

It is the banana tree, as recorded by Abd al-Razzaq, Hannad, Abd ibn Humayd, Ibn Jarir, and Ibn Marduyah on the authority of Ali—may Allah, the Exalted, honor his countenance. A group has also recorded it through various chains of narration from Ibn Abbas. Ibn al-Mundhir narrated it from Abu Hurayrah and Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, and Abd ibn Humayd from al-Hasan, Mujahid, and Qatadah.

It is also narrated from al-Hasan that he said: "It is not the banana tree, but rather a tree with cool, moist shade." Al-Suddi said: "It is a tree resembling the Talh (acacia) of this world, but it has fruit sweeter than honey." It has been said: "It is a tree from the large ‘Idah (thorny trees)." It has also been said: "It is the Umm Ghaylan (acacia) tree, which has many blossoms of pleasant fragrance."

(And extended shade): Extended, stretched out, and spread wide; it does not shrink, nor does it vary, like the shade between the break of dawn and sunrise. The apparent meaning of the narrations suggests that it is the shade of the trees.

Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and others recorded from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—that he said: "Indeed, there is a tree in Paradise in whose shade a rider travels for a hundred years without crossing it. Read, if you wish: [And extended shade]."
