And Raised Couches (*Furush*)

Furush is the plural of firash (couch/bedding), like siraj and suruj (lamp/lamps). Abu Haywah recited it with a quiescent ra (i.e., fursh).

Raised: Arranged and elevated, or raised upon couches; thus the elevation is physical, as is apparent. Ahmad, al-Tirmidhi (who classified it as hasan), al-Nasa'i, and a group of others narrated from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri that the Prophet (may Allah exalt him and grant him peace) said: "Their height is like the distance between the heaven and the earth, and the journey between them is five hundred years." Do not deem this far-fetched in terms of ascending, descending, and the like, for that world is another world beyond the scope of your reason.

Hannad narrated from al-Hasan that their height is a journey of eighty years, though it does not reach the status of the previous report. Some said: it means high in value, such that their elevation is figurative, meaning their nobility. Regardless, what is intended by furush is that which is spread out for sitting upon.

Abu 'Ubaydah said: The intent is women, for a woman is metonymically referred to as a firash (bedding), just as she is metonymically referred to as libas (clothing), and their elevation is in status and rank. It has also been said: They are upon the thrones (ara'ik), and the intention behind His saying—the Exalted—is to designate women.
