"Indeed, We have produced them in a [distinct] production"

The pronoun, for the most part, refers back to something mentioned previously, and there is nothing but the "raised couches" (al-furush), and it is not fitting to refer back to them except in this sense; yet, such usage is far-fetched here. According to the view that the "couches" refer to women—even though they were not explicitly mentioned—the mention serves to complete the explanation of an implied matter that the context indicates. It is as if it were said: "and raised couches" and "women," or "and hur al-'ayn (wide-eyed companions)," then their description was initiated with His, the Exalted’s, words: "Indeed, We have produced them in a [distinct] production," as a completion of the explanation and an increase in encouragement, not as a reason for their being "raised."

It is said that the referent is implied, and the estimation is: "And couches raised for their husbands or for their wives," so "Indeed, We..." is an initiation [of a sentence] providing the reason for the being "raised." That is, they are raised for their husbands because We have produced them [in that manner]. The former [view] is more in accordance with the eloquence of the Great Quran.

The meaning of "We have produced them" is: We have recreated them without [the process of] birth, because those about whom this is reported are your women of this world. Ibn Jarir, 'Abd ibn Humayd, al-Tirmidhi, and others reported from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said regarding this verse: "They are the munsha'at (the produced ones) who were in the world as old, rheumy-eyed, and bleary-eyed women."

Al-Tabarani, Ibn Abi Hatim, and a group [of scholars] reported from Salamah ibn Mith'ad al-Ju'fi, who said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say regarding His, the Exalted's, saying: "Indeed, We have produced them in a [distinct] production": "The previously married women and the virgins who were in the world."

Al-Tirmidhi in al-Shama'il, Ibn al-Mundhir, and others reported from al-Hasan, who said: An old woman came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to admit me into Paradise." He replied: "O mother of so-and-so, Paradise is not entered by an old woman." She turned away weeping. He said: "Inform her that she will not enter it while she is old; indeed, Allah, the Exalted, says: 'Indeed, We have produced them in a [distinct] production'..."

Abu Hayyan said: The apparent meaning is that the "production" (insha') is the creation that was not preceded by any other creation, and this is specific to the hur al-'ayn. Thus, the meaning is: Indeed, We have initiated them in a new beginning without birth or prior creation.
