Meaning black smoke, as stated by Ibn Abbas, Abu Malik, Ibn Zayd, and the majority. It is on the scale of yuf‘ul, and it has few parallels. It is derived from al-humma, which is a piece of charcoal. Naming it a "shade" is a form of mocking comparison. It is also narrated from Ibn Abbas that it is the canopy of the Fire that surrounds its inhabitants, rising from every direction until it shades them.
Ibn Kaysan said: It is one of the names of Hell, for it is black, and everything within it is pitch black—may Allah the Exalted protect us from it. Ibn Buraydah and Ibn Zayd also said: It is a black mountain in the Fire, the summits of which terrify the people of the Fire, and they find it to be the most severe of things. The prepositional phrase is in the position of an adjective for "shade," as is His saying, Glory be to Him:
