(Are surely to be gathered to a fixed time...)
(They shall surely be gathered) after the Resurrection, and it is also recited as (They shall surely be the gatherers), (to a fixed time of a known Day). This is the Day of Resurrection, and the meaning of it being "known" is that it is appointed and determined by Allah, the Almighty and Majestic.
The miqat (fixed time) is that which is used to set a time or limit for a thing. From this are the Mawaqit of Ihram, which are the boundaries that one intending to enter Makkah may not cross except in the state of Ihram. The genitive construction (idafa) of the term to "a Day" is for clarification, as in the phrase "a ring of silver." The Day of Resurrection is a miqat because the world has been limited by it. The preposition "to" (ila) indicates the final destination and the end point. It is said that the meaning of "shall be gathered" is that they will reach the end at that Day. It is also said that the verb implies the meaning of "driving," and therefore it is transitive by means of that preposition.
