Tafsir of Al-Waqi'ah 56:64

{Is it you who grow it}—that is, cause it to sprout, causing it to grow and develop until it reaches its maturity?

{Or are We the growers?}—meaning, the ones who cause it to sprout, not you. The discussion regarding {Is it you} and {or} is as has passed previously.

Al-Bazzar, Ibn Jarir, Ibn Marduyah, Abu Nu'aym, and al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman (who deemed it weak), as well as Ibn Hibban—as stated by al-Khafaji—narrated from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah exalt his mention and grant him peace) said: "Let none of you say 'I have planted' (zara'tu); rather, let him say 'I have tilled' (harath-tu)." Then Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Have you not heard Allah the Exalted saying: {Have you seen what you sow? Is it you who grow it, or are We the growers?}" He (may Allah be pleased with him) was pointing out that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) derived this prohibition from this verse, as he attributed the tilling to the addressees but not the growing.

Al-Qurtubi said: It is recommended for the farmer to say, after sowing and reciting this verse: "Allah is the grower, the causer of germination, and the one who brings things to maturity. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad, grant us its fruit, avert its harm from us, and make us among those who are grateful for Your favors." It has been said that this supplication has been tested for repelling the blights of crops and for increasing their yield.
