Al-Waqi'ah: 86

"Then why, if you are not madinin (held in judgment/subjugated)..."

Meaning: If you are not governed [or subject to dominion], from the expression "the ruler dana the subjects," meaning when he manages them and brings them into servitude. From this root, a male slave is called madin and a female slave madinah. Al-Akhtal said: "She raised him, and he grew up in her care, a son of a [female servant], you see him upon his shovel, kicking."

The discourse refers to His saying—Exalted is He—: "We have created you, so why do you not believe?"

It has also been said: It is derived from dana in the sense of yielding and submitting, and it is used metaphorically for recompense, as in the saying, "As you judge [or repay], so shall you be judged [or repaid]." That is: "Then why, if you are not to be recompensed..." It is linked here to their denial of the Resurrection, but this is not sound.
