Tafsir of Al-Waqi'ah 56:88

(As for him, if he is of those brought near [to Allah])

This is the beginning of the explanation regarding the state of the deceased after death, following the explanation of his state at the time of death. The pronoun in "if he is" (kāna) refers to the deceased mentioned previously. That is: if the deceased, whose state has been described, is one of the forerunners among the three groups [of people], he is referred to by their most noble descriptions.
