Tafsir
Verse range: 57:26
"And indeed, We sent Noah and Abraham" — this is a type of detailing for what was summarized in His saying, the Almighty: "We have already sent Our messengers." The oath is repeated to demonstrate increased concern for the matter; that is: "And by Allah, indeed We sent Noah and Abraham."
"And We placed in their descendants prophethood and the scripture," meaning that We appointed them as prophets and revealed scriptures to them. Ibn Abbas said: "The scripture" means writing with the pen. In the mushaf of Abdullah, it is written as al-nabiyyah (prophethood) with a ya instead of a waw.
"And among them," that is, among the descendants—and it is also said: among those to whom the messengers were sent, indicated by the mention of the sending and the messengers—"is guided, but many of them are defiantly disobedient," those who have departed from the straight path.
He did not say "and among them is misguided," even though that would be more apparent in terms of parallelism, because what is in the noble arrangement is more eloquent in condemnation. This is because departing from the straight path after reaching it, having the ability to follow it, and knowing it is more severe than merely being astray from it. Furthermore, it serves to signal the prevalence of the people of disobedience over others.
