Al-Mujadilah: (9) O you who believe...

"O you who believe, when you converse privately" (in your assemblies and your secluded places), "do not converse privately in sin and transgression and disobedience to the Messenger" (as the hypocrites do; the address is directed to the believers, by way of allusion to the hypocrites. It is also permissible that it is addressed to the hypocrites, and they are called 'believers' in consideration of their apparent states).

The Kufans, al-A'mash, Abu Haywah, and Ruways read fala tanajaw (as the imperfect tense of intaja). Ibn Muhaysin read fala tanajaw by assimilating the ta into the ta. It has also been read with the omission of one of the two [ta's].

"And converse privately in righteousness and piety" (in what involves the good of the believers and refraining from disobedience to the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace). "And fear Allah" (in what you perform and what you abandon), "the One to Whom" (alone, and not to any other—He, Glory be to Him, being independent or participating)—"you shall be gathered," (for He will recompense you for that).
