Al-Hashr: 24

He is Allah, the Creator (The One who determines things according to the requirements of wisdom, or the Originator of things without a precedent or model. Al-Khalq is interpreted as bringing a thing into existence from another thing. Al-Bari is the Originator of them, free from any disparity in what is required by wisdom and nature. It is also said: the One who distinguishes some of them from others through various forms). The Shaper (The One who creates their forms and qualities as He willed).

Al-Raghib said: The "form" (Surah) is that by which entities are imprinted and distinguished from others, and it is of two types:

  1. Sensible: perceived by the common person, the elite, and even humans and many animals, such as the form of a horse that is witnessed.
  2. Intelligible: perceived by the elite, not the common people, such as the form by which humanity is distinguished through intellect, reflection, and meanings with which one thing is singled out from another.

To both forms, He, the Exalted, pointed in His saying: "We created you, then We shaped you," among other verses. This concludes his point, so take heed.

Ali—may Allah ennoble his countenance—Hatib ibn Abi Balta’a, Al-Hasan, and Ibn al-Sumayqa’ read [it as] Al-Musawwira (المصورَ) with the waw opened (fatha) and in the accusative case (nasb), as the object (maf’ul) of Al-Bari’, intending by it the genus of the shaped. From Ali—may Allah ennoble his countenance—it is also narrated with the waw opened and the ra kasra-voweled (المصورِ), as an annexation (idafa) of the active participle to the object, like [the phrase] "the striker of the slave" (al-daribu al-ghulam). In Al-Khaniyah, it is stated that reading Al-Musawwira with the waw opened here invalidates the prayer. Perhaps he meant if one applies it to Allah, the Exalted, in that state; otherwise, there is room for debate in claiming invalidation after what you have heard.

To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names (Those indicating the best of meanings). Whatever is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him (of all existents, [either] by the tongue of state due to the wisdom and interests they contain which exceed the scope of expression to enumerate, or by the tongue of speech granted to each of them as befits it, according to what many of the gnostics have said, and discussion of this has preceded). And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.

The All-Mighty, the All-Wise

He is the Gatherer of all perfections, for despite their multiplicity and branching, they return to the perfection of Power, which is indicated by "The All-Mighty" (based on its interpretation as the Overcomer), and to the perfection of Knowledge, which is indicated by "The All-Wise" (based on its interpretation as the One who acts according to the requirements of wisdom). In this, there is an indication of adornment (tahliya) after emptying (takhliya), as in His saying: "There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing." Reflect on this and do not be heedless.

These verses possess great virtue, as indicated by numerous narrations. Imam Ahmad, Al-Darimi, Al-Tirmidhi (who classified it as hasan), Al-Tabarani, Ibn al-Durays, and Al-Bayhaqi in Al-Shu’ab narrated from Ma’qil ibn Yasar that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Whoever says when he wakes up three times, 'I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from the accursed Satan,' then recites the three verses from the end of Surah Al-Hashr, Allah will appoint seventy thousand angels to invoke blessings upon him until he reaches evening, and if he dies that day, he dies a martyr. And whoever says it when he reaches evening has the same status."

Al-Daylami narrated from Ibn Abbas in a marfu’ (elevated) report: "Allah’s Greatest Name is in six verses at the end of Surah Al-Hashr."

Abu Ali Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Naysaburi narrated in his Fara’id from Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah that Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib said to Ali ibn Abi Talib—may Allah ennoble his countenance: "I ask you by Allah to distinguish me with the best of what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) distinguished you with, from what Gabriel brought him from the Most Merciful, Mighty and Majestic." He said: "O Bara’, when you wish to call upon Allah by His Greatest Name, recite the first ten verses of Al-Hadid and the end of Al-Hashr, then say: 'O He who is thus, and there is nothing thus other than Him, I ask You to do for me such and such.' For by Allah, O Bara’, if you were to call against me, the earth would swallow me up."

Page V28P064: Al-Daylami narrated from Ali—may Allah ennoble his countenance—and Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in a marfu’ report to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said regarding the saying of the Exalted: "If We had sent down..." to the end of the Surah: "It is a remedy for headaches."

Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi narrated in his History: We were informed by Abu Ubayd al-Hafiz, who said we were informed by Abu al-Tayyib Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Yusuf ibn Ja’far al-Muqri al-Baghdadi (known as Ghulaf ibn Shanbudh), who said we were informed by Idris ibn Abd al-Karim al-Haddad, who said: "I recited before Khalaf, and when I reached this verse ('If We had sent down this Quran upon a mountain'), he said: 'Place your hand on your head, for I recited before Hamza, and when I reached these verses, he said: Place your hand on your head, for I recited before Al-A’mash, and when I reached this verse, he said: Place your hand on your head, for I recited before Yahya ibn Wathab, and when I reached this verse, he said: Place your hand on your head, for I recited before Alqama and Al-Aswad, and when I reached this verse, they said: Place your hand on your head, for we recited before Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), and when we reached this verse, he said: Place your hands on your heads, for I recited before the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and when I reached this verse, he said to me: Place your hand on your head, for when Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended with it to me, he said: Place your hand on your head, for it is a cure for every disease except al-sam, and al-sam is death.'" [This is] in addition to other reports, and Allah, the Exalted, knows best.
