Tafsir of Al-Mumtahanah 60:5

"Our Lord, do not make us a trial for those who disbelieve" (meaning: do not grant them authority over us, so they might revile us and torment us). This was stated by Ibn Abbas. Here, fitnah (trial) is an infinitive used in the sense of the passive participle maftun, meaning "the tormented," derived from the expression "one tests silver" (fatana al-fiddah) when one melts it. It is as if it were said: "Our Lord, do not make us those who are tormented by those who disbelieve."

Mujahid said: "Meaning, do not torment us at their hands, nor with a torment from Yourself, lest they think they are upon the truth and we are in falsehood, and thus be led into trial (or deception) by that." Qatadah and Abu Mijlaz said something similar, though the first [interpretation] is more probable. This supplicatory sentence was not linked to the one preceding it by a conjunction, following the style of counting sentences, as is also the case for the following sentence. It has been said that this sentence is a substitute (badal) for the one preceding it, but this is refuted by the fact that the two meanings do not coincide, neither in whole nor in part, and there is no relationship between them other than that of supplication.

"And forgive us" (what has transpired from us).

"Our Lord, indeed You are the Exalted in Might" (the Victorious, Who does not humiliate one who seeks refuge in Him, and does not disappoint the hope of one who relies upon Him), "the All-Wise" (Who does not act except in accordance with profound wisdom).
