Tafsir of Al-Mumtahanah 60:7

( "It may be that Allah will bring about, between you and those of them with whom you have been at enmity" ) — meaning, from your polytheist relatives — ( "affection" ) — by them coming to agree with you in religion. Allah, the Exalted, promised them this when He saw their firmness in the religion and their intensity in opposing their fathers, sons, and all their other relatives, and their total severance of ties with them, in order to comfort their hearts. Allah, glory be to Him, fulfilled His noble promise when He facilitated the Conquest [of Makkah], and their people embraced Islam, resulting in the love and mutual purity that occurred between them. This includes Abu Sufyan and his likes among those who accepted Islam at the Conquest from among their polytheist relatives.

'Abd ibn Humayd, Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn 'Adi, Ibn Marduyah, al-Bayhaqi in al-Dala'il, and Ibn 'Asakir narrated through the paths of al-Kalbi, from Abu Salih, from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, that he said: "The affection that Allah, the Exalted, placed between them was the Prophet’s, peace be upon him, marriage to Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan; thus, she became the Mother of the Believers, and Mu'awiyah became the Maternal Uncle of the Believers." You know that her marriage took place at the time of the migration to Abyssinia, while these verses were revealed in the sixth year of the Hijrah, so what is mentioned is hardly correct in its apparent sense, and there is criticism regarding its attribution to Ibn Abbas.

( "And Allah is All-Powerful" ) — hyperbolic in power; He, glory be to Him, is capable of turning hearts, changing conditions, and facilitating the causes of affection. ( "And Allah is All-Forgiving" ) — hyperbolic in forgiveness; He, majestic is His glory, will forgive what you committed in the way of befriending them. ( "All-Merciful" ) — hyperbolic in mercy; He, mighty and majestic is He, will have mercy on you by uniting the divided, transforming betrayal into trust, and changing animosity into love. It is also said: He, glory be to Him, forgives those who embraced Islam from the polytheists and has mercy on them. The first [interpretation] is more beneficial and more appropriate to the context.
