Tafsir
Verse range: 65:8
(And how many a city) meaning: many of the people of a city. Ibn Kathir recited it as ka’in (كائن) with a lengthened vowel (madd) and a hamza, and the detailed discussion regarding this has already passed.
(Rebelled) meaning: acted with tyranny and arrogance,
(Against the command of its Lord and His messengers) so they did not comply with that.
(So We brought it to a severe account) by scrutinizing, investigating, and debating every naqir (speck) and qatmir (husk) of their sins.
(And We punished it with a repulsive punishment) meaning: a denied and immense punishment. The intent is the reckoning of the Hereafter and its punishment. The use of the past tense for them is to indicate their certainty, as in the saying of the Exalted: "And the Trumpet will be blown." Several others recited it as nukuran (نُكُرًا) with two dammahs.
