Hummaz (Backbiter)
**Hummaz**: A constant fault-finder and slanderer. Abu Hayyan stated that it is derived from *al-hamz* (the push). Its linguistic origin refers to striking or stabbing with the hand, a staff, or similar implements. It was then metaphorically applied to one who attacks with their tongue. Mundhir ibn Sa‘id added that it also includes attacking with one's eyes and gestures.
Mashsha'in bi-Namim (Gossip-monger)
**Mashsha'in bi-Namim**: One who carries speech from one group of people to another for the purpose of causing corruption between them. Indeed, *al-namim* and *al-namimah* (gossip/tale-bearing) are verbal nouns meaning incitement and corruption. It has been said that *al-namim* is the plural of *namimah*, intended here to represent the category. The root of *namimah* is whispering and light movement, from which comes the saying: "May Allah silence his *namah*," meaning the sound or movement by which he betrays his presence.
