{فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَالصَّرِيمِ}

Like a garden whose fruits have been harvested, such that nothing remains therein. It is in the fa‘īl form, carrying the meaning of maf‘ūl (passive participle). Ibn Abbas said: "Like black ash," and in the dialect of Khuzaymah, it carries this meaning. It is also narrated from him that al-ṣarīm is a well-known patch of sand in Yemen that grows nothing. Mu‘arrij said: "Like a patch of sand that has become detached (inṣaramat) from the main body of sand, and it produces nothing useful." Mundhir, al-Farra’, and a group said: Al-ṣarīm is the night; the intended meaning is that it became burnt, resembling the night in its blackness. Al-Thawri said: "Like the morning," in the sense that it became white like harvested crops. Others said: Both the night and the day are called ṣarīm because each one departs (inṣirām) from the other and comes to an end.
