But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;

Al-Qalam: (26) "And when they saw it, they said..."
"And when they saw it" – the first moment their eyes fell upon it.
"They said, 'Indeed, we are lost'" – that is, [we have lost] the path to our garden, and it is not the same place. This was stated by Qatadah. It has also been said: "[We are] lost from the right course in our setting out with the intention of depriving the poor," though this [interpretation] is not as strong.
