Tafsir of Al-Qalam 68:43

"Their eyes humbled": This is a state (hal) of the nominative subject in yad’una (they are called), in that their eyes are in the nominative case by virtue of being the agent (fa’iliyyah). The attribution of humility (khushu’) to the eyes is because its effect is manifest in them.

"Ignominy will cover them": It will overtake and envelop them.

"Humiliation": An intense one.

"And they were called to prostration": ...while in the world. The use of the explicit noun in place of a pronoun is to increase the confirmation, or because what is meant by it are the prescribed prayers, as stated by an-Nakha’i and ash-Sha’bi, or all acts of obedience, as has been said. The "call" here is the call of religious obligation (taklif). Ibn Abbas and Ibn Jubayr said: They used to hear the adhan and the call to prayer but would not respond.

"While they were sound": They were capable of it with the utmost capability. Meaning: they would not respond to it and would refuse it. The omission of mentioning this [refusal] is due to confidence in its obviousness.
