Tafsir
Verse range: 69:10
"And they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord" means that every nation disobeyed its messenger when he forbade them from the abominations they were engaged in. The singular form of "messenger" is taken at its apparent meaning, though it is permissible that it is a collective noun, or a term that applies equally to one or many, as it is originally an infinitive (masdar) used here to imply multiplicity, as the context demands. It is thus a case of matching a plural with a singular, implying the division of individuals, or the singular is used for them collectively because they are united in meaning regarding that with which they were sent. The apparent meaning is that this is an explanation for their coming with the "sinful deed" (mentioned in the preceding verse).
"So He seized them"—that is, Allah, the Almighty and Majestic.
"With a crushing seizure"—that is, one that is excessive in severity, just as their abominations increased in ugliness, derived from the verb raba (to grow/increase) when something exceeds its bounds.
