Tafsir of Al-Haqqah 69:2

"What is the Inevitable Reality?" This is based on the [grammatical] premise that "What" (Ma) is the subject and "The Inevitable Reality" (al-Haqqah) is the predicate, or vice versa, though the first [case] is more likely. The former is the most famous [interpretation]; the connector [between the two parts] is the repetition of the subject in its own wording. The underlying [meaning] is "What is it?"—meaning, what is it in its state and description? For "What" (Ma) may be used to inquire about a quality or a state. Thus, the explicit noun was placed in the position of the pronoun to glorify its status and to emphasize the terrifying nature of the matter.
