Verse range: 69:31

Open in Qurani

Then cast him into Hell (al-Jahīm)

That is: Do not cast him into anything except Hell, which is the great fire, intensely blazing due to the magnitude of the disobedience he committed, which is disbelief in Allah the Almighty.

It has been said that this is because he used to act arrogantly toward the people. This is based on the interpretation that the preceding passage refers specifically to rulers, indicated by the gravity of his situation and Allah the Almighty’s explicit declaration regarding his punishment.

An objection—derived from the statements of Qatada—that might undermine this view is addressed by the fact that there is no harm in the verse being an explanation of the state of some of those who are given their book in their left hand. A similar case is the upcoming verse, if Allah wills: "And he did not encourage [others] to feed the poor," for many among the people of the left hand are not like that. Furthermore, scholars have mentioned that al-Jahīm is the name of a specific layer of Hell; so reflect upon this.
