Surah Al-A'raf 7:119

ﳎ ﳏ ﳐ ﳑ

And Pharaoh and his people were overcome right there and became debased.

Al-A'raf: 119

(So they were overcome there and turned back)

(So they were overcome), meaning Pharaoh and his people, (there), meaning in that great gathering, (and turned back humiliated), meaning they became abased, or they returned to the city in that state. Thus, the "turning back" is either a metaphor for becoming—and the suitability is evident—or it is in the sense of returning, in which case "humiliated" is a circumstantial qualifier (hal). The first [interpretation] is favored by His saying, Glory be to Him:
