Verse range: 7:14
(He said) is a resumption [of speech], as has passed, based on a question arising from what preceded it, as if it were said: What did the accursed one say after he heard what he heard? So it was said: He said: (Grant me respite) i.e., delay me and do not let me die (until the Day they are resurrected), meaning [the resurrection of] Adam, peace be upon him, and his offspring, which is the time of the second trumpet blast. He intended by that to find scope for leading [others] astray, to exact revenge, and to be saved from death, since there is no death after the resurrection.
