Verse range: 7:36
(And those who denied [among you] Our verses [which are being recounted], and were arrogant toward them [and did not accept them], they are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.)
[The subsequent part of the discourse pertains to] their denial and their arrogance. This sentence is conjoined to the preceding sentence. The inclusion of "piety" (al-ittiqā’) therein serves to signify that the pivot of success is not merely the absence of denial, but rather piety and abstaining from it. The inclusion of the fa (conjunction 'so') in the promise [of reward], as opposed to the threat [of punishment], serves to emphasize the former and allow for leniency in the latter.
