Surah Al-A'raf 7:50

ﲰ ﲱ ﲲ ﲳ ﲴ ﲵ ﲶ ﲷ ﲸ ﲹ ﲺ ﲻ ﲼ ﲽ ﲾ ﲿ ﳀ ﳁ ﳂ ﳃ ﳄ

And the companions of the Fire will call to the companions of Paradise, "Pour upon us some water or from whatever Allah has provided you." They will say, "Indeed, Allah has forbidden them both to the disbelievers."

{And the companions of the Fire will call to the companions of Paradise} After each of the two parties has settled into their abode and become established in their dwelling:

{that you pour upon us} Meaning: pour upon us {some water} so that we may seek aid by it against what we are in. The outward meaning of the verse indicates that Paradise is above the Fire.

{or from what Allah has provided for you} Meaning: or from that which Allah the Exalted has provided you of other beverages, to suit the pouring, or of the foods, as it is narrated from al-Suddi and Ibn Zayd. One may assume for the conjoined element a verb that suits it, or interpret the first verb in a way that suits both joined items, or ensure it is one that can govern the second, or treat it as a case of mushakalah (stylistic correspondence). In the verse is evidence of the extremity of their thirst and the intensity of their hunger, and that the torment they are in does not prevent them from requesting food and drink. It is with this that Musa al-Kadhim (may Allah the Exalted be pleased with him) refuted Harun al-Rashid—as it is narrated—when the latter denied that the people of the Gathering would eat, arguing that what they are in is the strongest of preventions against that.

Scholars have differed as to whether this request was made with the hope of obtaining it or in despair of it, given that they knew the permanence of what they were in; some scholars have leaned toward each of these views.

{They will say, "Indeed, Allah has forbidden them to the disbelievers"} This is a continuation based on a [hidden] question, as if it were said: "What did they say?" It is then said: They replied to them, "Indeed, Allah has forbidden them to the disbelievers." That is, He has prevented them both, or has prohibited them as the prohibited is forbidden to the legally responsible; thus, there is absolutely no way to obtain that. It does not bear the meaning of 'prohibition' in its common sense, for the Abode [of the Hereafter] is not an abode of legal responsibility.
