Al-Ma'arij: 10 **"And no close friend will ask a close friend..."**

That is, no compassionate relative will ask a compassionate relative about his condition, nor will he speak to him, because each of them is preoccupied by what distracts him from doing so. Ibn al-Mundhir and 'Abd ibn Humayd recorded this from Qatadah. In another narration from him, it is said: he will not ask him about his condition because it is already manifest.

It is also said: he will not ask him to carry any of his burdens for him, due to his despair of such a possibility. It is also said: he will not ask him for intercession.

In al-Bahr, it states: he will not ask him for his aid or benefit, because he knows he will not find that with him. Perhaps the first interpretation is more profound in conveying the terror. Regardless, the second object of the verb "ask" is omitted. It is also said that hamiman (a close friend) is in the accusative case due to the removal of the preposition, meaning: "No close friend will be asked about a close friend."

Abu Haywah, Shaybah, Abu Ja'far, and al-Bazzi (with a difference of opinion reported from the three of them) recited la yus'alu (in the passive voice), meaning: no close friend will be asked for a close friend, nor will he be tasked with bringing him forward, or perhaps he will not be asked about his condition. It is also said: he will not be asked about the sins of his close friend so that he may be taken to account for them.
